COPIC refill

Copic markers are amazing and magical.. but one bad thing about them is that they do dry out and die rather fast compared to other color types (color pencils and watercolors last a lifetime!) and they’re quite expensive so that’s a big downside to them. BUT, a copic refill costs about as much as a full marker and can refill about 6 times or more! So it is a very good deal! (but when you think that you’re gonna need a separate refill for each color… that sounds like a lot of refills eh?)

Anyways, today I’m gonna show you how to refill copic markers. What you’re gonna need is the dead copic marker, the refill of the same shade, a cone/needle thing, and the tweezers (all are made by COPIC and sold by them)

The color I’m refilling is #100 black.

First thing you have to do is open the marker from the broad side (less likely to get damaged), get the tweezers, and pull up that broad tip. Don’t be scared! It’s all good.. it’s meant to be done this way.

 

This is how it will look like.

Then get the needle thing and put it in the marker (where you took out the broad tip). Don’t push the needle in too hard! Just let it rest there and pour the ink and it will flow by itself inside the marker. I’d suggest that u put in about 3 units (little lines on the refill bottle). Pouring in too much ink will cause some ink leakage from the other (bottom) side of the marker and it might cause a mess! So be careful.

When you’re done from that just pick up the broad tip and put it back in place. Let the marker rest horizontally for a bit so that the ink can flow to the broad tip side of the marker, and you’re done! The marker is now good as new 😉

One last extra step is cleaning the needle… you’re gonna need the colorless blender ink refill. Pour it in the needle while holding a tissue on the other end of it to clean up the needle from the ink and make it usable for other color refills.

COPIC FAQ

1. From where do you buy COPIC markers?

I personally bought mine from several websites online 5~6 years ago and I don’t remember any… but I know they’re sold in amazon, copic official website and several others, just search and find one that ships to your country.

as for Kuwait residents, copics are sold in Arts Centre Central and this is their phone number 22409288 and their website www.artcentrecentral.com . there’s also an instagrammer who sells them for a good deal @otaku_dream and this is his phone number 99915547 (but to be honest I didn’t buy copics from either sellers)

2. what kind of paper suits copic the best?

definitely copic bleedproof marker pad.

of course there are many others that work with copics nicely but you’re gonna have to try and test how it bleeds and blends on them. regular printing papers don’t work, and thick watercolor papers will suck all the ink and the marker will dry up and die quickly.

3. which copic markers do you like the most?

copic sketch because of the brush tip. it’s PERFECT for blending and for the skin and hair and folds and EVERYTHING.

(copic ciao also have the brush tip so it would do the same job)

4. what sets do you have? which ones do you recommend?

I have copic sketch 72 set A and B, and about 30 indiviually bought copic sketch markers.

I can’t recommend one over the other because it depends on your drawing and coloring style and your needs. I noticed that set A has more vibrant colors and B is softer.

5. how many shades do you use for the hair?

usually about 3~4

6. how do you shade/blend colors?

I’m gonna have to make seperate blog posts and videos to show that.. hopefully I’ll do that soon.

7. do we need to buy the whole collection?

of course not! you can buy individual markers depending on your drawing and characters.

8. what should I use to outline the drawing?

sadly pencils and ball point pens don’t work with copics. you’re gonna have to use waterproof inking pens (the ones by copic and yoken worked perfectly with me) but make sure you give it some time to dry completely! and make sure to test and see how it works with you before applying it on your drawing.

9. what other important items that I have to own when I use copics?

just proper papers and inking pens.. other than that it’s all just extras

10. what are the types available?

the ones I know of are copic original, sketch, ciao, and broad. my favorite is the SKETCH type.

11. what’s the proper way to layer colors?

I personally prefer light colors first and then dark.. but it’s up to you to experiment and maybe you disagree with me.

12. do you use another type of colors with them?

usually no, but I do like to use a white colored pencil to help me with highlights sometimes.

13. are they expensive?

YES! sadly. how much they cost depends on the place you want to buy them from.. the price varies a lot.

14. promarkers/prismacolor VS copics?

copics win all the way (at least for me). I prefer the brush tip and the ink of the copics.

15. why do you love copics?

it gives a very vibrant clean finish to the drawing.. most people think it’s a print of a digital drawing. they’re also relatively easy to use.

introductory: COPIC SKETCH

the markers I love to use are the japanese COPIC markers… I just love the brush tip in SKETCH and CIAO pen types. I personally would recommend that you don’t buy copic markers until you’re already good in coloring and have a good understanding of light and shade and folds etc.. because otherwise it would be a waste of ink considering how expensive they are. so be patient and practice till you’re confident in your coloring and then move on to copics.
نوعي المفضل للألوان الشينية أو الماركرز هو الماركة اليابانية كوبيك. أحب نوع السكيتش لانه مثل فرشة الألوان المائية و سهلة جدا لدمج الألوان. انا شخصيا احس ان من الأفضل أن ما تشترون الكوبيك الا اذا كان مستواكم بالتلوين زين و فاهمين طريقة الظل والنور ..الخ لأن الكوبيك مو رخاص و اذا ما كنتوا تعرفون للتلوين راح تضيعون الحبر عالفاضي. ف تدربوا عالتلوين عدل و بعدين حولوا كوبيك.
my fav COPIC marker type is SKETCH.. this is how it looks like. it has an oval section (original is square, ciao is circle)

soft airbrush effect using chalk pastels

hello everyone! this tuttorial is about preparing your chalk pastels and using them to create the soft airbrush effect.

these are the chalk pastels I use. they’re by Winsor&Newton and they’re called Artists’Soft Pastels. I like these because the pigments are strong and they show well.

pick your colors, remove the paper wraps, and get a cutter (or a different sharp edge of your choice). scrape off the chalk pastel from the sides using the cutter till you get a nice soft powder. try to not create chunks of chalk because that could ruin the soft effect when you use it.

for storing I like to put the powder in these little plastic containers. you can prepare large amounts of chalk powders for future use to prevent creating a mess everytime.

here I used this powder using 3 different brush types and sizes. each one creates a different effect and density of color.

My Watercolors

I’m gonna talk a bit about the watercolors I love to use. I started learning and practicing watercolors in 2006, been loving it since then!

الحين بتكلم عن أنواع الألوان المائية الي عندي. أول مرة استعملت الألوان المائية بضمير كان ب سنة 2006.. و من ذاك اليوم وأنا أحبهم.

These Daler-Rowney watercolors were my first real watercolors.. I still use them and they’re still far from running out. But there are some colors (a green and a brown) that just won’t get dilluted with water! I don’t know what’s their problem.

I got these from Dasman Complex (Kuwait)

أول ألوان مائية شريتهم اسمهم Daler-Rowneyليلحين استعملهم و أحبهم وايد و بعدهم مطولين على ما يخلصون. بس في لونين مادري ليش ما يذوبون بالماي! درجة من الأخضر و درجة من البني.. مادري شنو مشكلتهم.

Then I bought these cotman watercolors tubes because I was so curious about them. There isn’t much of a difference between the tubes and the regular ones in my opinion, except that since the tubes are already liquid-y, they can be used for more intense coloring faster without having to wait for the colors to get dilluted with water. When the colors dry on the palette, they turn into the exact same thing as the regular ones, just not in little square pans.

و بعدين شريت هالألوان اسمهم Cotman من نوع العصارات الي تنضغط. كان عندي فضول عن الفرق بين النوعين بس بصراحة ما حسيت بفرق وايد كبير.. بس إن اللون تكون كثافتة أكثر لان اللون يكون ذايب و جاهز للاستعمال بسرعة بدون الحاجة الى الانتظار على ما يذوب مع الماي. من ينشف اللون على الباليت يصير بالضبط نفس الألوان المائية العادية الي شكلها مستطيل.. يعني تقدرون تحطون عليهم ماي و تردون تستعملونهم

this one shows the colors dry, and how it’s like after putting water on it to dillute it again. و جذي شكله لما ينشف.. و لما تردون تذوبونه بالماي

And then I saw this super adorable tiny set of cotman watercolors in pans. They’re just perfect! except that this set does not include a black… solution is easy: get a black watercolor tube and squeeze a bit on the other side.

using a toothbrush in paintings

I’m gonna show you all how I use a toothbrush in my paintings! it makes some awesome effects and I really suggest that u try this out. Just get any old toothbrush (make sure it’s clean though!), put paint on it, then splatter it on the paper.
بوريكم شلون استخدم فرسة الاسنان برسوماتي. هالطريقة تعطي تأثيرات عجيبة و انصحكم تجربونها. اخذوا أي فرشة قديمة بس تأكدوا انها نظيفة و حطوا اللون عليها و طشروه على الورقة.

in this quick example I’m using my Daler-Rowney watercolors.. first I’m using a blue/green color dilluted with a lot of water.. splattered it as shown in the pic
بـ هالمثال السريع استخدمت الوان مائية. أول شي خذيت لون أزرق على اخضر و كان فيه وايد ماي و طشرته مثل ما الصور توضح.

 

 

then to show u how to play more with it, I added a yellow with less water.
بعدين حطيت لون أصفر بس ما خلطت معاه وايد ماي, عشان أوريكم شلون ممكن تلعبون بالتأثير هذا.

these are examples of how I applied it in my drawings. I used it to create this blood stains effects using watercolors, and to create a starry sky look using a white acrylic.
و هذي امثلة على تطبيق التأثير هذا برسوماتي. استعملته عشان اسوي تأثيرات بقع دم بألوان مائية, و عشان أسوي مثل نجوم على السماء بلون أكريلك أبيض.

Painting Dolls

This is a little tuttorial about how I paint dolls… I took these pictures a while ago and posted them on instagram but I deleted them later, so I decided to post them here with all the info and stuff.

شرح مبسط عن كيفية تلوين الدمى على طريقتي.. الصور صورتهم من زمان و كنت حاطتهم بانستغرام بس حذفتهم عقب فترة, فقررت إني أحطهم هني مع جميع المعلومات.

1. First step is making sure the head is prfectly clean and dry, then sparying a layer of MSC on it to protect it from color stains. I spray MSC after each step to protect the paint.

أول خطوة هي التأكد إن الراس نظيف, و بعدين رش المثبت عليه قبل التلوين لحمايته من الألوان. أنا أحب أرش المثبت بعد كل خطوة عشان ما ينمسح شي.

2. I use chalk pastels with a brush and start brushing it on the head wherever is required.. so it’s mainly on the eyes, lips, and cheeks.

استعمل ألوان باستيل الطباشير بفرشة و أحطه على العين والفم والخد.

3. build up the color intensity by sparying layers of MSC and re-applying the chalk pastels.

أزيد كثافة اللون عن طريق رش المثبت بعد كل طبقة.

4. Draw the eyeliner with black acrylic paint and a thin brush, and the upper eyelid details with a watercolor pencil.

أرسم كحلة العين باستخدام لون أكريلك أسود, و تفاصيل الجفن باستخدام ألوان خشبية مائية.

5.  Add the lower eyelashes using acrylics/watercolor pencils.

الرموش اللي تحت أرسمهم بألوان أكريلك و ألوان خشبية مائية.

6. Did the eyebrows by using chalk pastels first then define the hairs with watercolor pencils.

أبدي رسم الحواجب بالباستيل و بعدين أرسم تفاصيل الشعر بالخشبي المائي.

7. I apply the gloss on lips and eyelids. I use one by Tamiya.

أحط لمعة على الشفايف والجفن. اللي استعمله ماركة تامييا.

8. And final step is to glue on the upper lashes using white glue.

آخر خطوة هي تثبيت الرموش اللي فوق باستخدام غراء أبيض.

5 advices

5 advices for those who want to draw/paint and get better at it.

this is just my personal opinion about this from my own humble experience, so it doesn’t mean that they have to be correct and there’s definitely other important advices from other artists and teachers as well.

1. Practice, practice, and practice.this is the most important thing ever when it comes to any sort of art. keep doing it and never give up.. even if it takes years!! try to draw as much as you can whenever you have time.

2. Patience. and this is required in two main stuff; first you need the patience because you won’t see yourself improving quickly. you really have to spend a lot of time and effort to improve.

the other thing is patience while drawing. give the drawing time and work on it as much as it needs to look complete. I’m not saying that all art should take many hours to get completed, but don’t rush it and stop working on it and assume that you finished, when it’s actually far from it.

3. Try everything! all sorts of coloring methods and techniques in both digital and traditional, different types and sizes of paper, different art styles like portrait or abstract or whatever. learn the best of everything and then you can really understand how to use what you want and why, and what do u have to use to produce the idea in your head.

4. Search for inspiration. find out what inspires you and look for more when you’re out of ideas. for example, I get inspired by looking at other artists’ works, and by looking at gorgeous artistic pictures with a person or more in it.

5. Take lessons and polish up. it’s true that you don’t need any lessons to become amazing at drawing, but sometimes professional artists can give some really smart advices about using a certain tool or colors. and when you have someone professional to teach you they will find your weakpoints and help you improve.

5 نصائح حق اللي يبي يرسم و يتطور بالرسم.

هذا رأيي الشخصي من خبرتي البسيطة, فـ مو شرط انهم يكونون صح و أكيد في نصائح أفضل من الفنانين و المدرسين إلي عندهم خبرة كبيرة.

1. الممارسة الممارسة الممارسة. هذا أهم شي في أي نوع من الفن. تمرنوا و مارسوا و لا تستسلمون حتى لو ياخذ سنين! رسموا كثر ما تقدرون متى ما صار عندكم وقت.

2. الصبر. الصبر مهم من ناحيتين بالرسم, أول شي لازم يكون عندكم صبر لأن التطور بالرسم بطيئ و يبيله وايد وقت و طاقة.

ثاني شي, لازم يكون عندكم صبر أثناء الرسم. عطو الرسمة وقت على تخلص. مو قصدي إن الرسمة لازم تاخذ ساعات من وقتكم, بس يعني لا تستعجلون و تقررون بسرعة إن الرسمة خلصت اذا اهي بالواقع بعيدة جدا عن النهاية.

3. جربوا كل شي! كل أنواع التلوين التقليدية و الكمبيوتر, أنواع أوراق مختلفة و أحجام مخلفة, أنواع فن مختلفة مثل البورتريه و الفن التجريدي إلخ. تعلموا شنو الأشياء الايجابية بكل مجال عشان تعرفون متى تستخدمون شنو وشلون, لأن هالشي وايد يسهّل تطبيق الأفكار اللي ببالكم على اللوحة.

4. ابحثوا عن الالهام. عرفوا شنو يلهمكم و يعطيكم أفكار. مثلا أنا أحب أشوف شغل فنانين آخرين, و أحب أشوف صور فنية و يكون بالصورة إنسان أو أكثر.

5. أخذوا دروس و دورات للرسم و صقلوا موهبتكم. بالواقع الانسان ما يحتاج أي دروس عشان يصير فنان, بس ساعات الناس اللي عندهم خبرة يعطونكم نصايح وايد مفيدة و ذكية عن طرق استعمال الأدوات والألوان. وبعد لما يكون عندكم مدرس خبير راح يعرف نقاط ضعفكم و يساعدكم على تحسينها.
